Economic Development
BP Refinery
The BP Refinery (formerly BP Amoco) site in
Wood River, Illinois has been selected as one of five RCRA/Brownfields
Prevention Initiative pilots for 2001. EPA's Brownfields
Economic Redevelopment Initiatives is designed to empower
states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic
redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent,
assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.
A brownfield is a site, or portion thereof, that has actual or
perceived contamination and an active potential for
redevelopment or reuse.
A team of experts from EPA Headquarters and
Region V will work closely with representatives of the
facility, EPA Illinois, the City of Wood River, and the local
community to scope and clarify the implementation goals of the
pilot. The EPA has been launching unfunded RCRA
brownfields Prevention pilot projects since March 2000 to
showcase the flexibility in RCRA, and in particular, some of
the concepts embodied in RCRA Cleanup Reforms. The
goal of this effort is to showcase successes that can help
other communities in modeling future innovations for
cleanup and redevelopment at RCRA sites.
