Excerpt from Clark's Journal
An elkskin-bound journal of American
explorer William Clark is open to the entry of October 26,
1805. That day the Lewis and Clark Expedition remained in camp
repairing canoes after running the rapids of the Columbia
River’s Short and Long Narrows, near present-day The Dalles,
Oregon. "We passed Safe to the astonishment of all the
Ind[ians]," Clark wrote.
